Classmates V

VanDerveer Herzog, Sandra (herzog.sandy@gmail.com)
At the time of our 40th I was absorbed with decorative painting and worked seasonally with private customers and Fortunoff designing Christmas decorations/trees. Over the course of the past 10 years I had a small business designing and creating wedding invitations, continued to free-lance for Fortunoff Backyard Stores and rekindled my love for knitting. These days my ultimate joy comes from spending time with my 3 (local) granddaughters and grandson in CT (to be joined in May by a new baby). Not surprisingly they were the inspiration for and reap the benefits of my knitting! When not spending time with the grandchildren or knitting I’m an insatiable reader, love to cook, walk and take frequent trips to the beach. I’ve kept in touch with a number of classmates following and thanks to the 40th reunion! I plan on attending our 50th and catching up with everyone in attendance! Van Doren, Mark
Deceased.

From The Athens Messenger on Oct. 29, 2017

NEW MARSHFIELD – Mark Roberts Van Doren died peacefully at home in New Marshfield, Ohio, surrounded by his family, on Oct. 15, 2017, due to cancer. He was 66. Mark was born on Nov. 21, 1950, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to James R. and Louise A. Morrison Van Doren, who predeceased him.

Mark graduated from Livingston High School in Livingston, N.J. He earned a BA in mathematics from Rutgers University, an MA in mathematics from the University of Illinois, and completed ABD in genetics and development, also at the University of Illinois. He earned an AS in electronics technology from Ohio University, Lancaster. Mark loved learning and problem solving – whether in the garden, the lab, taking or teaching classes, studying bryophytes, or doing math for fun.

Mark was married for 39 years to Mary E. Van Doren, who survives him. He had five daughters, Anna (1981-1985); Helen and Greta, both of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Alice and Veronica, both of Athens. Mark is survived by three brothers, Chris (Elaine) of Maine and Florida, David (Rosmarie) of Florida, and Jon (Faith) of Tennessee. He had several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mark’s life work was his family. He was at home as much as possible when the children were young; they all learned so much from him, and he learned so much from them.

Velasco, Patricia (Ricia)
I’m still living in New Hampshire with my husband. I retired at age 60 and enjoy sewing / quilting, keeping up with friends and relatives by e-mail and Facebook, and folk dancing, especially contra-dancing. I have three grown children, three grandchildren, and one great grandson, all living significant distances away; it keeps me traveling! I think it is ironic that most of the Class of 68 turned 68 this year. I’m looking forward to joining all who attend our reunion in celebrating our community created over 50 years ago and nurtured by the reunion committee!
